When I first got pregnant, I joked around with Royce about having a baby girl, about how his mom might actually try to be a part of our lives if we had a girl because it is likely her only chance to have a granddaughter. And now we know that we are having a girl. And, out of the blue, Royce gets a text message from Arlene that says simply that she would like to talk to him and invites him to lunch. They are meeting on Sunday. Royce and I both think my speculation has come true. And we have mixed feelings. We would love for her to be a part of OUR lives. As in, HUDSON's life, and us as a family. Honestly, we have never "kept" him from her- she has never made an effort to be a part of it. If this meeting goes as I suspect, and truly hope, she will have a LOT of making up to do for our little boy. He is NOT "just another grandson" as I am led to believe she thought. He is a beautiful, curious, creative, smart, darling little boy full of personality. He is so much joy and love. She has missed out on so much with him. Royce and I agree that if she requests a relationship, it will need to start right away- not just as baby girl is entering our lives. It will need to be consistent. And it will need to be instigated by her. We are not going to be doing the calling or inviting until it has been proven that she is serious and willing to do her part to maintain it. We are thrilled that she wants to be involved- but we are seriously hurt that Hudson wasn't enough. Or Royce, for that matter. But whatever it takes now, we are willing to be a part of it.
Of course, this meeting could be about something else entirely. Who knows? But whatever it is, it is a step in the right direction. Hopefully a path will follow.
