I've made mistakes as a mom, everyone does, but they have all been itty bitty things that have quick fixes. This morning's mistake had a fairly quick fix too, but it sure felt like my first failure. Getting ready for work, it was a mostly normal morning. Stupid disagreements with my husband made it a little more rushed, but nothing huge. Cars running, warming up, get kiddo in seat, diaper bag crammed into car, throw keys and that stupid hat we were fighting about onto the front seat. Kiss my sweet boy, shut the door.
TRY to open the front door. PANIC as I noticed the doors are all LOCKED. Shit. Remain calm. Call Royce. He is coming home and seems fairly calm. Call mom to let her know we will be late. Call work to tell them I will be late. Call police dispatch. They are on their way. Royce gets home, runs inside, stomps, slams, stomps some more. By now, Hudson has realized something is wrong.
Come on, mom, just get in here and let's go! No more silly peek-a-boo. Now he is crying and pulling at the seat belt. Shit. Check on Royce's progress. "Where the hell is your extra key to unlock the door?!" No mention of where the hell is
his full set of keys, of course. Back to calm Hudson. Sing Blackbird medley. He is looking at me like
this game isn't fun anymore. And crying again. Engine dies. Now I know that he's been in there about 12 minutes. Just then, the Sheriff pulls up. PHEW!! I greet him kindly and he seems like a really nice guy. Grabs his tools, a silly plastic wedge and a thick bent up wire.
Seriously? As he starts jimmying his way into my car, I am talking to Hudson, "What's he doing, huh? This nice guy is gonna fix mommy's silly mistake. I'm sorry, buddy." Hudson is calm now, just waiting. Let Royce know officer is here. He is still stomping and slamming. Back to car, where officer almost has it. POP! Doors are unlocked!!! YAY! Give the officer a huge hug of thanks and get my baby out of the car to let daddy know he is ok. PHEW. Royce comes out to love Hudson. Barely glances at me, except to say "I'm FUCKED...." and babble on about how he is now late to work and will be late getting off and late to meeting, etc. etc. Wow. Well, I guess I know who to call next time, the fella who gives me a hug and solves my problem, not the man I married and sleep with and love. Sorry to have bothered you.
