Ending a great shopping day with a BANG!

This is where one of my best friends was when it all happened.

On Sunday, Alex and I went shopping for the final touches of our pinup girl costumes. We were feeling pretty good too, on top of our game, having found everything we wanted/needed. We had just left my house, with her in her little yellow Cobalt, and me in my Escape behind her. I was following so that after we went to dinner with our boys, she and Kyle wouldn't have to drive us home, since I'd dropped Royce off there earlier. I'm sorry, Alex, to admit, but I am so very thankful that me and my little bump were not in your car.

As Alex went through the intersection, at around 5:47, the light turned yellow. She told us she remembers thinking "I'm gonna lose Tracy, she'll just meet me at the house." I don't even know what I was thinking because the next thing I see is a car ramming the Cobalt. I remember the sound most of all, a loud crushing sound. I remember saying aloud "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!!" and being at a loss. What do I do?! The light was now red, so to get across would be too long of a wait. Instead, I turned right and pulled over on the shoulder. As I did this, another car pulled over in front of me. I remember noticing all the nice people stopping. I ran across the street (when it was clear) and hesitated a little before approaching the car. I was so afraid. What if she was bleeding profusely? What if she was unresponsive or unconscious? I do NOT do blood and guts. But as I approached I realized she was sitting up ok, eyes straight forward. She was bleeding a little, from her hand, but I could handle that. I asked if she was ok and she answered feebly, "Yeah, I think so. Will you call Kyle? I can't do it, I'll lose it." I called Kyle and explained that we would be awhile, that Alex had been in an accident but was ok. He asked where we were, so I assumed he was coming, but as I was making the call, I didn't think to ask him to come. Then I climbed into the passenger seat and tried to keep her talking, knowing that she was feeling some shock and just trying to keep her coherent. I really didn't know what else to do. The other driver had called 911. She kept coming over to Alex, "Are you ok? I am so sorry! I am so sorry!" Alex would answer that she was ok, but then she would stare off into space. I knew she was angry. She had every right to be angry. But to get the girls to go away and quit begging her for forgiveness I answered "It happens." This got her away, just as the police and ambulance arrived. They asked how she was doing, and she told them that her hand was cut but not badly and that her ribs hurt. They suggested she go to the hospital in the ambulance and she asked if they could wait until her husband arrived. Next, they asked her if she had a preference for tow trucks. Alex was at a loss, thinking to herself "Can we work towards getting me out of here before you load the car up?" I stepped out of the car as Alex talked to them and called the boys. They were on their way, and Royce suggested a tow company. I asked them to hurry, explaining what was happening now. I also assured Royce that I was ok, that I hadn't been involved. As I was hanging up, they were asking Alex whether or not she was ok to climb over the console, or if they would have to cut the door. Alex decided to climb over. I was so worried 'cuz I know that Alex has a history of back problems. When she got out, they took her to the ambulance and shut the door behind her. I wanted to be with her so badly. I hated to leave her alone. Especially where the other girls were in there together. Before too long, Kyle and Royce pulled up and they let Kyle into the ambulance. I was relieved that she wasn't alone anymore. He didn't stay in too long, as he wanted to make sure all the paperwork was correct. At some point, I grabbed stuff out of the car. She had to have all the cute stuff we'd bought! I also grabbed my camera for pictures. Royce took all the pics, he knew what to look for. We stood around for a long time. Finally, they assisted the other girls out of the ambulance. The driver fell nearly to her knees sobbing, as she got another look at the cars. A little while later, they assisted Alex down. We had decided that we would take her up to the hospital in our Escape, rather than send her in the ambulance or bumpy Bronco. As Royce and Kyle talked to the tow driver and police to tie up loose ends, Alex and I got settled into my car. Then we met the boys back at our house to drop of the Bronco and pile in to my car. I made Royce drive up to the hospital, I felt bad with every bump I hit, every turn I made. We got to the hospital around 7. At the hospital, Alex was taken back to Triage in just a couple minutes. Royce and I waited in the waiting room until a little after 9:00, when they released her, with a prescription for a strong pain killer and a warning that she would be very sore. Otherwise, she was fine. Since we were on our way to dinner when all this started, we were all starving so we went out to eat. Just a crazy night. Glad Alex is safe. Glad that she was not alone. Glad that we could do what little we could to help.

Surprise Party!

So I have decided to have a big surprise party for my mommy's 50th birthday. 'Cuz, ya know, I don't have enough on my plate... Nah. Actually I am super excited for it! My boss is letting me use our big double classroom again, so I can decorate and set up however I want to. I'm having it the same day as my graduation, so it's gonna be kind of a crazy day, but it will be awesome! I'm thinking of some themes to go with and I've come up with a few:

  • 1960's - 'cuz she was born in '61. Pretty easy to do, but still fun

  • Grandma's - 'cuz she's gonna be one! I don't know exactly where I'll go with this one, just kind of a gag theme with fun pictures and stories about grandma's.

  • To Grandma's House we go - woodsy, red gingham
Still thinking it all over. I have projectors I can set up picture slide shows or whatever, speakers for music and we'll have light refreshments. I want it to be relaxed, more of an openhouse style party, where people just mingle. So I won't have to plan fun and games or anything like that. I'm inviting a whole gaggle of people, from her high school buddies, to family, to the girls she coached on my softball team. She's kind of loved by everyone, so I expect it to be pretty full! Today, May 7th seems a long way off, but I'm sure it will come quicker than I can imagine!

There may be some truth to the old pregnancy and pickles cliche...

Week Nine (no pics!)

How I am feeling:
  • This week I have had some headaches and dizziness. Taking baby doses of Children's Tylenol. It actually helps, or I'm feeding into the placebo effect.
  • I have a bubbly tummy. I want to throw up, think it'd help, but it just isn't happening.
  • I'm uncomfortable. Can't sit or lay in one position, constantly tossing around.
  • Legs are achey. Not like before, nothing specific, just generally achey.
  • Feelin' fat. Wish I was feelin' (and lookin'!) preggers, but it's just fat. An ugly bulge. Probably the same as in all the weeks prior, but it just feels more pronounced and pants are feeling tighter. Went shopping for a cutesy dress and nothing fit right. Boobs are too big, and still growing, belly pootch is just that. Probably why I skipped the pics this week.
  • Want my Bump!!
  • Still happy! Probably sounds like I'm complaining, but I'm not, just writing honestly about my feelings. I am happy to be where I am, excited to gain all that weight, have swollen ankles, etc. But I do want my bump, so that it's obvious to everyone else why I have the weight and swollenness. It will all be more than worth it!
  • As of today, I kind of don't want to know the gender of baby. Crazy!!?!! I'm sure I will, I'm not good with secrets or surprises, but as of today, a surprise might be nice.

Everything else about this pregnancy was meticulously planned and assisted.

It wasn't just two happy people doing what they do, it was two happy, determined, people doing what needed to be done, at a certain time with a goal in mind.

Then it was two happy, determined, frustrated people doing what needed to be done, at a certain time, with a goal in mind, with the aid of medicine and medical practitioners.

Finally, it was two happy, determined, frustrated, desperate people having the experts do what needed to be done, at a certain time, with a goal in mind, preceded by medicines, examinations and constant worry.

Now it is two deliriously happy people cautiously excited about a future.

A little surprise might be kinda nice.

But I have about 7 more weeks before they can confidently determine gender anyways...

My bike!

Final product... minus the new grips...

LOVE IT!!!

Happy Valentine's

For Valentine's, we went to Rovali's with the car club. It was a great date night!

Look how studly Royce looks, button-up shirts... and slacks!!

Kyle and Alex

Bob & Weezie

Bob & Judy
After dinner, they drove home, then to the hospital. Bob had a heart attack! It was crazy! We had just seen him, spent the whole evening with him. He is doing ok now, after a surgery where 3 stints were put in, then his heart stopped, so a pacemaker was added too. He was in ICU for a couple of days, then a regular room for a day, and he is back home. Hope he heals quickly and can join us for our next activity!

Week Eight

How I am feeling:
  • So happy to not be throwing-up sick! Only nausea I've had is smelling something and not wanting it. Especially Cup 'O Noodles. Oh yeah, and the yucky stink of puppy poop at Mom's grooming shop made me gag a bit.
  • No more body zits.
  • Boobs are feeling better, not sore, not itchy.
  • Just lovin' life... and sleeping... and working... and sleeping...
  • Got my new pillows, definitely needed new pillows! They've even helped with my sleepy-arm syndrome, where I fall asleep on my arm and wake up with it tingling.
  • Not peeing as much either... or not noticing it? I dunno.

A weekend with Georgia

AJ went on a fishing trip last weekend. One of his dogs, Georgia, is a little too rough with Mom's new pup, Stella, so we offered to keep her Friday night. Rigby loves his cousin Georgia and had a lot of fun with her!

Royce kinda likes her too...

Mommy advice

I've finally decided to review the 4 page email sent to me by a friend and re-type some of her unsolicited, though much-appreciated advice:

  1. "Neh" - Hungry
  2. "Owh" - Tired
  3. "Eh" - Burp
  4. "Eairh" - Gassy
  5. "Heh" - Uncomfortable
These sounds are made at the beginning of a cry, so listen carefully. If baby's need is not met, the word is lost in an exaggerated cry.
  1. Swaddling - Tight swaddling provides the continuous touching and support the fetus experienced while still in Mom's womb.

  2. Side/stomach position - You place your baby, while holding her, either on her left side to assist in digestion, or on her stomach to provide reassuring support. Once your baby is happily asleep, you can safely put her in her crib, on her back.

  3. Shushing Sounds - These sounds imitate the continual whooshing sound made by the blood flowing through arteries near the womb. This white noise can be in the form of a vacuum cleaner, a hair dryer, a fan and so on. The good news is that you can easily save the motors on your household appliances and get a white noise CD which can be played over and over again with no worries.

  4. Swinging - Newborns are used to the swinging motions that were present when they were still in Mom's womb. Every step mom took, every movement caused a swinging motion for your baby. After your baby is born, this calming motion, which was so comforting and familiar, is abruptly taken away. Your baby misses the motion and has a difficult time getting used to it not being there. "It's disorienting and unnatural," says Karp. Rocking, car rides, and other swinging movements all can help.

  5. Sucking - "Sucking has its effects deep within the nervous system," notes Karp, "and triggers the calming reflex and releases natural chemicals within the brain." This "S" can be accomplished with breast, bottle, pacifier or even a finger.
  • Register in person at stores for free coupons and gifts. (We did this this weekend)
  • When stockpiling diapers (we hope to start soon) buy size 2 and larger because baby will grow fast. Buy from Costco or Sams.
  • Her fave brand is Huggies for the back leak guard, but there is a lot available and we'll need to compare and see what works best for us.
  • For formula, don't stockpile because babies have such sensitive tummies. And hopefully, we won't need to supplement... but if we do, again Sams or Costco for cheaper.
  • Become a fan of Ju-Ju-Be on Facebook to win free or discounted diaper bags and accessories.
  • Carter's brand clothing is highly recommended for availability, cost and quality. And for her little girl who was born in October last year, she made a fancy size chart that covers all the seasons so people knew what size would be needed for what weather. With my baby due in September, I won't have to change much at all, and it will be very handy to have with all these cute Valentine's clothes going on sale after today!
Gotta Haves:
  • burp clothes- Lots!
  • bibs- Lots!
  • swaddle blankets
  • Boppy chair
  • 2 baby brushes- one for hair, one for scrubbing laundry
  • baby bath tub... buy used at DI for $5
  • baby swing... buy used for cheaper
For me:
  • coco butter (Palmers) and lanolin for stretch marks - "Start now!"
  • good supportive bras, also for sleeping
  • maternity jeans and capris available at Old Navy
  • Not from her letter, but I also want to buy a couple of belly bands pretty soon

Sweet, sweet insurance!

Got a bill today. A bill for $461. A bill for my IUI procedure. Now, I wasn't upset when I received this bill because, well, mostly because it was successful. I got a baby in my belly because of this $461 procedure. But I did go right to my insurance website and look up my coverage because I know I had looked into it before I agreed to the procedure. And I was right. See, this was copied directly from the site:

Infertility Services

The Plan pays Benefits for the treatment of infertility for:

● ovulation induction;

● insemination procedures (Artificial Insemination (AI) and IntraUterine Insemination (IUI);

● Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), including but not limited to, in vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT);

● Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) for diagnosis of genetic disorders only; and

· Pharmaceutical Products for the treatment of infertility that are administered on an outpatient basis in a Hospital, Alternate Facility, Physician’s office or in a Covered Person’s home.

To be eligible for Benefits, the Covered Person must:

● have failed to achieve a Pregnancy after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse if the woman is under age 35, or after 6 months, if the woman is over age 35;

● be under age 44, if female; and

Physician’s Office Services

Outpatient Services received at a Hospital or Alternate Facility

$150 copay per visit then 100% of eligible expenses.

Artificial Reproductive Technologies (ART) is limit to $2,000 per calendar year.

Donor egg retrieval is excluded.

So, I called their billing office and they are going to send it through to my insurance with no reason as to why they hadn't already. I'm glad I got it taken care of, glad I don't have to pay it, but even more glad that it was successful. And that if insurance couldn't or wouldn't pay it, I'm glad that I could have. Just glad all over! :)

Feelin' Lucky

But even with all these whacked-up hormones, I can't begin to say how lucky I am. Blessed, really.

I am pregnant. My pregnancy symptoms have been quite mild. In 8 short months, I will have a beautiful, healthy baby to share. I have so many amazing people to share this love with. I have a wonderful hubby who will be the best daddy ever. My pretty mommy has already put in her 9-month-notice so she can babysit when I return to work. I have a job to go back to. A good job, with awesome benefits, including my infertility-covered insurance and fully-paid-for Masters Degree - which will be completed one month before baby comes. And when I am ready, I will be fully hire-able for my dream job. I have so very many caring friends and family who are already planning baby showers for me and stocking me up with baby supplies. I am loved, blessed and so very lucky. I hope I don't take these things for granted.

There are people who can't have babies. Who try for years, but cannot succeed. People who cannot afford the help. People who want babies so badly and would make amazing parents.
There are people who don't want babies and find themselves in a situation where they have to make the hardest decision of their lives.
There are people who cannot even find that one perfect person they would even want to raise children with.
There are people who have children but do not have the means to provide for them. Or people who choose not to provide for them.
There are children who do not have people to love them and teach them the basics of life.

It's a sad world and not everyone is as lucky or blessed as I am.

DANGER Pregnant: Hormones in Flux

You hear about these things, the cravings, the baby-brain, the hormones, but you never expect it be as bad as they say. You tell yourself that it won't hit you, especially as badly as you want this baby. It hits those moms that don't want to be moms. Those moms who didn't exactly plan things. Those moms who are in bad situations. Other moms. Not you.

Except it does. No matter how hard you've tried, how much you've spent to get there, or how much support you have. It hits. And it hurts.

I am really so very happy. Giddy, Thrilled. Excited. I'm lovin' life and lovin' me, but my dang pregnancy hormones are making me want to cry. Over everything. And nothing. I haven't yet, just felt the tears brimming, but I can just imagine when it does happen. With my internship, I feel lonely because my new mentor isn't overly friendly, and when I started talking to her about something and she got side-tracked by another counselor, I swear I could have just lost it there and then. Yesterday, when we were meeting with a group of 1st graders and teaching about good touch/bad touch, I just let my brain wander to all the people I know who have been affected by bad touches and I may have actually let a tear or two slip away. I'll just be sitting alone at my desk, not even thinking, and all of a sudden, I need to walk, get away, just to prevent the free flow!
So, if you happen to find me curled up in a ball, sobbing, just leave me be, or offer a hug. I'm fine. I'm thrilled, in fact. Just a little off balance!

New Intern Sites

I started with my new mentor today. It went well, it's going to be easy to get to know and love these kiddos, but it's a little harder to get to know her. She's nice and all, just hard to get to know. I don't know how better to explain it. I know one of the teachers at the school, she shows cars with her hubby, so maybe that'll make things a little easier. The principal is the one who showed me up to the counselor's office, and he seems really cool and easy to like. It's a smaller school, about half as many kids as Holt. But the other school that I will be working with her at is about the same size as Holt. She does things a little differently, but I think it will be great to see. I'm excited... and still nervous.

Week Seven

Pics to come...

How I am feeling:

  • Still so excited to be a mommy! But also, it's getting kind of scary now... there really is a little being growing in me! I saw it, I heard it!

  • Still very tired. Lots of naps and going to bed earlier.

  • Nose picks up lots of smells, but they don't nauseate me, just kind of disgust me and make me stay away.

  • I have zits on my back and neck.

  • Don't know if it's a pregnant thing or not, but my right leg is achey!

  • Sometimes, for no reason, I feel like I'm just gonna break down and cry. I haven't yet, but please, if I do, understand that it truly is FOR NO REASON!

  • Not sleeping great. I get uncomfortable easily, I fall asleep on my arms and wake up with my hands tingling, I have vivid dreams, and, apparently, I'm snoring loudly and beating my hubby up. I think I need new pillows.

  • Still peeing lots. I hate having to wake up in the middle of the night to pee!

  • Had my first craving yesterday at our Super Bowl party- Sherbet. Wanted something sweet, fruity, smooth and cold. Any flavor woulda done it. After the game, on our way home, I asked Royce to stop at the store. Except the store on our way was closed. He agreed to go to the store closest to our house and I told him if it wasn't open, I would deal with just a shake from Burger King. But when we pulled in the parking lot and the store was closed, he continued on to the next store. Aww! He loves me! We bought Raspberry Sherbet and went home and cuddled up to watch Glee. Happy night!

Mom's puppy, Stella

Isn't she sweet? She's itty bitty! A Yorkie. Not big enough to play too much yet, but she tries to get Lilly going.

No better time to be ME!

I'm lovin' life! Baby, bike, and better-than-a-bachelor's... I have arrived at where I want to be! I'm on my way to being a mommy, my bike is looking awesome, is at the pin-stripers and will be ready for AutoRama, and I have 27 weeks of class left! I start the second half of my internship this week, which is 15 weeks long, then 2 more classes @ 6 weeks each. I can make it!!! Luckily, my internship doesn't require a lot of homework, just a lot of hours. Now, if I could just get the energy to do a major overhaul of my house, life would be perfect!!

Baby's First Picture!

Hearing Bugatti's Heartbeat was the most amazing thing ever. I love this kid.
